We did it, Royal Welsh Show 2019! What a whirlwind!

Lots of preparation involved setting up the stand and stocking it with our equestrian and building products. Then a really hot, but productive time with the lovely public.

Lots of interest and orders were taken, and now the real work starts back in Hay-on-Wye at our base.

RJ Joinery is nearing its 10th Birthday!

We are constantly growing as a business and MD Roy is now thriving on all the knowledge and experience gained from his 20 years with CAM Equestrian and Derby House Group. Roy began his journey manufacturing CAM stable doors and CAM stables, working his way through the ranks to eventually become manager of the mail order and joinery department at CAM. CAM was then taken over by Derby House Group and Roy was invited to join the board of directors. However, after a spell on the board, Roy left to form his own company – RJ Joinery. The Coach House is a very versatile and spacious building and can be used as a storage room, playroom, home office, studio, guest or holiday accommodation.

Its been a very busy few months here at RJ Joinery getting our new website and store up and running!

After many years in producing our quality timber buildings, we decided to take the plunge and venture into the world of sales and have now opened up our very own in-house shop, specializing in selling high quality equestrian products, at competitive prices. One of most recent jobs was to renew a garden fence in Builth Wells, Powys.

We made the panels in sections at our Hay-On-Wye workshop, gave them a lick of paint then built the fence on site. Once erected, a second coat was applied. We even scrubbed down the existing gates and gave them a new finish to complete the job.

It’s a shame we don’t have a photograph of what the garden looked like previously! We completely transformed a tatty rotten fence hidden behind a hedge into a clean, stylish, quality fence – giving our customers garden a new lease of life!

6FT X 7FT GARDEN SHED

Made from a 3X2 frame and Scandanavian red-wood shiplap cladding, with a black onduline roof. The building is 7ft to eaves and an overall height of 8ft 6 to apex. Flooring is an optional extra – made from a 3X2 frame and 18mm OSB (Oriented Stand Board). This particular shed has a sea-grass matt finish, however our buildings can be finished in almost any colour of your choice. It’s the perfect solution for those with limited space in their garden and looks fantastic!

10FT X 12FT PENT ROOF SHED

Again, the same principal as the majority of our buildings – made from a 3X2 frame and Scandinavian red-wood shiplap cladding, with a black onduline roof and a 3X2 frame floor boarded with 18mm OSB. Instead of an apex, this building has a pent roof, sloping to the back. The finish is oil based cuprinol. Heavy duty reversible hinges on the door improve strength and prevent the door from dropping.

The doors on both buildings are manufactured using a ledged and braced structure, with a 22mm planed tongue and groove boarding.

At RJ Joinery, we offer a wide range of stabling and accessories to suit. Internal stabling can transform your existing buildings into stables using our divisional panels.

Our strong one piece metal galvanised panels are perfect for converting a barn into seperate stables. Partitions allow horses to see each other and what is going on around to alleviate boredom. Our beautiful v-jointed redwood tongue and groove boards are ready fitted to enable a rapid installation. All fixing brackets and door hardware is included.

RJ Joinery offer a wide range of stable mats, equimat, grass mat, cow matting, trailer mats and more. With over 20 years of experience in equestrian matting, we are confident in providing the best products and advice for any application.

Black Mat

Our 6ft x 4ft black mats are ideal for use in stables, providing a warm, safe and hygeinic flooring. Our popular, economic alternative to equimat stable mat. The black mat is a top quality, solid, rubber horse mat. A substantial 17mm thick mat with a ‘hammertop’ pattern on the top of mats which provide an anti-slip surface whilst being easy to sweep.

The underside is a series of grooves running the length of the mat. For a reasonable outlay you can fit your stable out with black mat, keeping your horse off the cold concrete floor, thus reducing the chance of injury whilst keeping your horse warm. With the savings on bedding material the black mat will quickly pay for itself, reducing mucking out times giving you more time to ride! This heavyweight mat is easy to lay and easy to cut to size. We supply and fit if required.

Equimat

Equimat stable mats provide assured protection from concrete floors. Better protection against injuries. Reduced likelihood of the horse slipping or becomming cast. Better comfort increases the horses lying time and vital deep sleep periods. Equimat is available in two thicknesses – 20mm for everyday stabling and 28mm (super soft) for specialist areas like vetinary boxes, foaling boxes, heavy horses. Or for horses receiving treatment for athritis, laminitis and other such conditions. Other information, prices and samples are available on request.

Are you finding your horses chewing a problem?

It is very common for stable horses to chew wood – mainly down to frustration and the boredom of being closed in the majority of the time. If they run out of food they will look for something else to chew. Doors, door linings and edges of your stables are more than conveinent. It is best to stop your horse from chewing as not only does it spoil your stable, it can also damage the horses mouth and teeth. The most effective way of preventing chewing is covering problem areas with metal strips.

We are delighted to have been involved with the design, fabrication and construction of this new national falconry centre in Wales.

RJ Joinery are pleased to introduce a new product – ‘RJ Joinery Pet Home’

Beautifully designed and manufactured – this product can be home to various animals. Customers who have previously purchased a similar product have used it for chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits and dogs.

We offer various options and styles upon request. The door can be made as per the photographs – a lockable ramp. Alternatively, it can be manufactured with a side hinged panel door, or a side hinged door fitted with safety glass. The house also has a removable rear panel making cleaning an easy task!

This product will be delivered on a pallet already assembled resulting in a care-free transaction.

After an extremely busy week at The Royal Show, the team are back at base camp and the enquiries are coming in thick and fast! The show seen record attendances with around 250,000 expected to have visited over four days.

We are pleased to announce we received a Royal Welsh Award of Merit. This being, reserve for Best Tradestand in the Agricultural Section not displaying Machinery. Whilst being a successful exhibitor at any show is a success, victory at The Royal Welsh Show is regarded as particuarly significant not only in Wales, but throughout the United Kingdom. Exhibitors attend from throughout Wales and beyond and the quality of competition is high.

“A big thank you to all of my staff for working long hours and to my wife for allowing me to do the same over the past two weeks. Well done all!” – Managing Director Roy speaking of his award.

The Royal Welsh show is the biggest agricultural show in Europe. It is organised by the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, which was formed in 1904, and takes place in July of each year, at Builth Wells, in Powys, Mid Wales.

RJ Joinery have been exhibiting at the Royal Welsh for the past 8 years and have now become a permenant fixture with a stand next to the horse ring. Early July proves a very busy and exciting period as we prepare for the show. We were granted access to the showground a week prior to the show in order to erect our stand. Below are step by step photographs of the construction team and hands-on director Roy erecting the bulding to a near completed stage.

This week we had the privilege of re-visiting a customer whom purchased a building over two years ago from us .Our customer saw the high standards of our work, both from the workshop and the office, that spurred him on to make another purchase from us recently!

The time and effort we put into each and every building we make is shown by the quality that we produce.

We use the best materials available and this is definitely proven by this building alone! The paintwork is still immaculate and the tile shingle roof still looked new, even after all the horrific weather we have had over the winter months!

This is a building made up of external 76 X 46mm stress graded c16 studwork with rebated feather edge boarding and the cladding was treated black. Its has a full 42″ wide stable door, fitted with our galvanised heavy duty ironmongary and chew strips made in our very own workshop. The windows were supplied as 6 blade louver’s with perspex glazing, made from the finest scandinavian redwood also treated black. The Grey Shingle Tile Effect Roof and the black squareline guttering finishes this building off to perfection.

We had one very happy customer!

RJJoinery Services attended the RWAS Spring Festival 2017 last weekend.

The show building, we decided on this year is a 12ft x 12ft Stable with a 15ft x 12ft Garage complex with corrugated roof, we used the building to showcase our:

• Deluxe Stable doors,
• Hopper windows,
• Black Mat,
• Equimat

Inside the black matting and Equimat were on the floor and the wall matting was displayed with anti-chew strips incorporated to showcase to our customers the finish look.

We had an example of our new Multipurpose Store and the metal runs Kennel too.

As you can see from the photos attached we also had a wide range of the products we sell on our website, from:

Simple reversible design includes a fixing hole if permenance is preferred. Everyone needs one of these for the stable, trailer, fence rail, tack room, garden shed or teenage bedroom! Bridle Rack

Continuously produced for over 40 years, this outstanding model has a specifically designed round cowl to prevent kinking of leather. The Stable Door

An integral part of your horses home!

RJ Joinery are proud to offer an extensive range of stable doors, supplied to fit into timber or brick built stables. In addition to a standard cuprinol treated, we offer a range of colours. Or, if you would like to prime and paint yourself, a clean finish is an option.

Top Quality

Hand-made by professional craftsmen in our UK workshop. A strong and robust door, lined with 12mm birch ply. Manufactured by screwing ledges and a brace onto 22mm planed, tongue and groove Scandinavian Redwood boarding.

Most stable doors on the market are constructed using nails. Therefore, screwing gives us an advantage over our competitiors! Screws are a superior fastener and work better over time. Not only do they hold better, they have better control going in, and draw boards together. Because most nails have a shaft with no ridges, they rely on friction to work. A little shifting or normal expansion/contraction of wood – they will work their way out.

There’s More!

Our doors come complete with heavy duty galvanised reversible hinges, padlock bolts, kick-over catch and keeper, cabin hooks and an anti-chew strip fitted to the top of the bottom door.

Anti-weave grilles and additional galvanised sheeting are available as extras.

We have used the same treatment processes for over 20 years. During the treatment process, the colouring of timbers may vary depending on the time spent in the treatment tank, species of timber and batches of timber. Should you request a longer soak this is something we are happy to provide, this will result in varied result.

The Compact Range (Smaller Horses & Pony Boxes)

RJ Joinery are pleased to introduce a new product line – ‘The Compact Range’. Smaller in depth and height in comparison to our standard size stables and field shelters but still keeping the high quality we pride ourselves on.

A purpose built box, which has been designed especially for ponies or horses that are 16 hands and under, using only the best material and construction as in the RJ Joinery loosebox. A beautifully made box with a very pleasing appearance and made to withstand a long life of hard work.

Size

Our pony boxes are of all timber construction, have an apex timber roof, and are sectional in design. Our standard size is 3.05M X 3.05M (10’X10′). They are 2.29M (7’6″) high at the eaves (rear) and 2.785M (9′) at the apex, giving adequate height for even the tallest pony. A 305mm canpoy is included in the design with a clearance height of 1.99M.

We provide the highest quality products at competitive prices with personal attention, giving you the customer, a first class service. We have four points that our equestrian buildings are based on – Strength, Practicality, Ventilation and Appearance. The panels in our buildings are bolted together, rather than nailed, creating much more stability. Not only do we supply the buildings, we can also supply you with doors, windows, ironmongery and chewstrips in standard and custom sizes and finishes.

In all of our buildings we use a stress graded studwork c16 or similar size depending on the span and height of the building; with a 19mm X 100mm Redwood tongue in groove shiplap cladding and lined internally with 18mm OSB Kickboard to 1220mm high as standard.

All buildings have a specifically designed truss system that makes the roof stronger than most others on the market as well as offering additional height internally. Once the panels, doors and windows have been manufactured, they are immersed in our tank to be treated in a golden brown oil based preservatice; this ensures that all saw cuts are treated before installation.

There are a variety of options available to choose from including roofing material, finished colours, external cladding, interior linings, guttering, and finially whether your building is to be mobile or permanent.

The Town Of Books

RJ Joinery are based in Hay-On-Wye, generally abbreviated to just ‘Hay’. Hay is a small market town and community in Powys, Wales, situated on the English border. The town, often described as ‘the town of books’ plays host to an annual leading literary festival, known as ‘Hay Festival’ and is a member of the International Organisation of Book Towns. Home to a large number of used book and antiquarian book stores and Hay Festival – the town lures bibliophile tourists from all over the world.

Hay Festival

Founded in 1987, set in Hay-On-Wye in the stunning beauty of the Brecon Beacons. For 10 days, Hay is full of stories, ideas, laughter and music! The festival continues to attract the most exciting comedians, politicians and musicians to inspire, delight and entertain the crowds.

For the 2015 festival, we were lucky enough to be involved in making the ‘Hollywood’ style letters in the photograph above, which proved very popular with the festival go-ers.

The Clock Tower in Hay-On-Wye stands on the corner of Lion Street and Belmont Road/Broad Street. The Victorian Gothic tower, built in 1884, was designed by the architect J. C Haddon and with its bellcote, and pointed roof it is remarkably similar to the clock Tower in Knighton.

Walks

There are many walks criss-crossing the border landscape in the vicinity of Hay-On-Wye, with winding country lanes leading to quaint villages with churches and steeple. A pub on the river bank, a red telephone box in the town square. It could be argued that Hay not only favours book lovers but it is also the Mecca for walkers. Two of Wales prime trails meet up in Hay-On-Wye: the Offa’s Dyke and the Wye Valley Walk.

The object of ventilation is to provide fresh air to the horse, which is achieved by providing sufficient openings in the building so that fresh air can enter and stale air can escape. In hot weather, ventilation is need to remove heat from the stable. Whereas, in winter, the purpose of ventilation changes from reducing heat to controlling moisture, ammonia and stench that have built up in the more closed environment of the stable.

Ventilation is primarily driven by wind forces, so good ventilation is achieved by allowing wind to bring fresh air into the building , while drawing stale air out.

A permenant opening to both eaves that allows air to enter air entry into each stall will provide fresh air to each horse.

One of the ways we achieve maximum ventilation in our stables is by buiding in a timber vent to the gable end truss.
